Sum 41 Share Softer Side With Emotional Ballad 'Never There'

Last month Deryck Whibley described Sum 41's upcoming album Order In Decline as their most personal yet, and after sharing two sociopolitical tracks off the project in "Out For Blood" and "A Death In The Family," the record's third offering shows a softer, more vulnerable side of the frontman.

"Never There" is a piano driven ballad written about Whibley's estranged father. “I never wanted to write this song, it just kind of poured out of me, I tried to fight it at first but there was no stopping it,” he said of the song. “I could tell I was writing about my dad, who I’ve never met and throughout my life it has always been a subject that I don’t really think about or care about.”

He credits his mother for being okay with his dad's absence in his life. “It has never really bothered me and when I started thinking about why it never bothered me, I realized it was because my mum was so great and I have such a loving relationship with her,” he divulged. “She was so strong as a single mother for my whole life that I never needed to think about my dad.”

The corresponding music video tells the story of Whibley and his mother, and is dedicated to single parents everywhere. Watch the emotional video below, and look out for Order In Decline on July 19.
