Imagine Dragons officially have a song playing on the moon! As reported last month, the band's 2023 single "Children of the Sky" was selected by space tech company Lonestar to be part of a mission to land a data center on the Moon.
âOur goal is to inspire the next generation of kids to be excited about the future of space and technology, which is why we chose âChildren Of The Skyâ as the first song in history to be broadcast from the Moon,â Lonestar investor Ryan Micheletti said in a statement at the time.
The landing was successful. "Success, weâre on the Moon! Following Athenaâs touchdown on the lunar surface, our friends at Lonestar successfully transmitted âChildren of the Skyâ song and lyrics to their data center on the Moon," composer Inon Zur, who's featured on the song, wrote on X. "The song will now be on the MoonâŚforever!!"
Imagine Dragons join a list of some pretty remarkable artists who also have music on the moon including Elvis Presley, Marvin Gaye, Santana, Jimi Hendrix, Chuck Berry, Sly & the Family Stone, Bob Marley, Janis Joplin, The Who and more; however, no song has ever been transmitted from the moon back to earth.
Unfortunately, that's still the case. Even though the landing was technically successful, it was reported that Athena landed on its side and 820 feet short of its target. This caused the mission to end prematurely without the ability to broadcast the song.
