#GoodNews: Teacher Adopts Special Student After Mother's Death

4 years ago, Jean and her 10-year old son Jake had moved to Massachusetts from Florida. Jean was terminally ill and a single mom, and Jake has down syndrome. After living there for just a few months, Jake’s special education teacher Kerry saat down with Jean and said I would like to offer guardianship for Jake if you need a backup plan.” Jean said her biggest fear was what would happen to Jake after she passed. She tearfully accepted Kerry’s offer.

Over the next 4 years, Kerry and her husband worked with Jean to make sure the transition would be easy on Jake. They celebrated holidays and birthdays together and Kerry even went to doctor appointment with them.

Jean passed away on November 13. Kerry, who has 3 children of her own, welcomed Jake into her home for good.
