Charlie Puth Talks 'Light Switch,' Collaborating With Finneas, And More!

Charlie Puth is back with brand new music and we couldn't be more excited. Charlie joined Valentine in the Morning to talk all about 'Light Switch,' working with Elton John, beefing with Benny Blanco, collaborating with Finneas, and more!

Fans have been anticipating this new song for a while now due to Charlie posting the process of creating “Light Switch” on TikTok back in September. Charlie said the song started off completely different from what it is now,

"The song actually sounded way different in the very beginning. It was how could I turn my mind of oh I wish I had a light switch to just turn my crazy musical mind off. It sounded really emo and depressing, but I was like you know what...people have been cooped up in their homes for so many years now so let's make them dance with 184 beats per minute. I never thought this many people would be 1. anticipating a song from me and I feel like that's pretty awesome and 2. I never thought people would care so much about how a song was made. I thought that was just something that I discussed with people close to me or myself. I never thought that video would go viral of me layering pianos and drums or coming up with a sound. Light Switch came about with me wanting to put a sound and me wanting to make that the title of a song."

Charlie wrote a song with Elton John called “After All” for Elton’s album “The Lockdown Sessions.” They started collaborating at the start of the pandemic and “After All” was the first song that both artists completed during lockdown. The crazy part was that this collab is how they found out they lived so close to each other.

"Want to know what's crazy?! Well first of all was that I told Elton that he had to make an album and he made an album because of our song, which is really cool. I also found out that we live 2 doors down from each other and I never thought that I would live 2 doors down from Elton John and that was just super random weird thing to happen. He told me his address and I was like i'm walking over."

Currently on TikTok, songwriter/producer Benny Blanco has been bashing Charlie, but we all thought it was a joke. It wasn't until Billie Eilish stepped in to defend Charlie that we all realized, this actually might be real.

"It was so wild because I wasn't AT ALL because you know i'm busy talking to myself, making songs like a lunatic. Somebody sent me that link and I saw that and was like that was nice of her. I saw a couple Benny videos and I just real honest answer I had no time to respond to them, but I was like wow someone's sticking up for me I wonder who else sticks up for me. Then I Googled it and nobody else did so I was like alright Billie's enough that's nice of her. Thanks Billie! I thought it was a joke too. I still don't know for me it's still a joke, but I don't know."

While we were talking about Billie, we ended up in the topic of Finneas which led to Charlie revealing that they actually collaborated together.

"Finneas and I made a song a couple weeks before the pandemic and we never finished it. The world will never hear it. We got as far as some melodies and the core of the song down. It was really cool it had some strings in it and very Finneas sounding. Very cinematic. It was really cool just watching another producer like their process and making music. It was very cool."
